The International Radiotelephony Spelling Alphabet, often called the "phonetic alphabet", is a set of 26 code words assigned to each of the 26 letters of the roman alphabet (along with slightly modified pronunciations for a few numbers). This system was developed to provide a way to keep letters and numbers easily distinguishable from one another over radio and telephone communications. It is widely accepted by organizations such the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), the International Maritime Organization (IMO), and more.
